Was your home office set up in a rush and now you’re working from a laundry room/gym/storage room? Don’t worry, we’re here to help!

Here are some handy tips on how to optimise your home office so that you’re able to reach peak productivity.

Location is everything

If you have a spare room you can turn into your home office, congratulations, you’re one step closer to building your dream home office. Unfortunately, the reality is that many of us only have a nook and cranny to set up workstation desks and office chairs.

The space should be quiet and private (stay far away from the kitchen and TV room) as it needs to provide you with as little distraction as possible.

Choose function over design.

When looking for home office furniture, it’s important to choose function over beauty, regardless of how quirky or awesome a piece of furniture looks. It’s your goal to make sure that you’re comfortable for at least 12 hours of the day.

It might look great now, but when you find that you experiencing back pain or neck strain from uncomfortable office furniture, you’ll thank us later.

Measuring is key

You want to make the most out of the space you have so it's important that you measure that your furniture is the right size before spending any money on it. You should have space to move freely once everything has been set up.

If you can’t find space for an office desk, try using a height-adjustable desk or a standing desk, which is great for combating sedentarism on a daily basis.

A study by researchers from the University of Leicester and Loughborough University assessed the benefits of standing workstations. Participants were provided with height-adjustable desks and instructions for standing and sitting objectives.

The results showed that height-adjustable office desks improved job performance, psychological health, productivity, work engagement, and fatigue, among other things. In the long run, height-adjustable desks will improve efficiency by allowing you to move your body more throughout the day.

Invest in ergonomics

You spend the majority of your workday sitting at your desk, so it’s important that you look after yourself and your body by choosing furniture that's ergonomic.

Browse the internet and do your research by reading as many reviews about the office chairs you like, in fact, once you’ve narrowed them down, head out to the supplier and sit in it before purchasing.

Invest in good lighting

The more natural light you can get into your home office, the better. If you’re not near a window, try and install natural light LEDs in your ceiling or get a desk lamp to create a nice cosy environment to work from.

Storage is key

Its actually amazing at how quickly an office space can become cluttered without proper office storage. If you’re low on space, think about putting up floating shelves or cabinets on the walls around you.

Try to do a recon at the end of the week and throw away or store any items that do not need to be on your office desk.

Make the space your own

Paint a feature wall with your favourite colour or put your favourite quote onto a canvas painting, but find a way to make the space your own. You’re going to be spending quite a bit of time in your home office, so it should able to inspire and motivate you.

Create a Floor Plan

Last but not least, you should create a floor plan for your home office design and choose a suitable flooring type. This will allow you to organise your ideas and make sure you’ll have everything you need. Additionally, it will help you visualize the kind of furniture and the placement for everything.
