Brett had started his career by leaving school early and working as a trolley boy at a supermarket. There he would go on to work his way up to become a store manager. After his career in supermarket retailing, Brett joined the hardware giant Bunnings, a company he would describe as a great company to work for to this day. He worked at Bunnings for eight years, moved around to five different branches as department manager before setting up his own retail store in a nearby bayside suburb. His skills in retail management and communication were pivotal in the success of the furniture retail store. Here is where he brought in two partners who were in the flooring industry. The three of them would go on to invest in the Flooring Xtra Store in Rosebud.

 

The Rosebud Flooring Xtra store, south of Melbourne, operated as an independent flooring store for 35 years before Brett and his co-directors Ben and Kevin invested in the store. The business had an established customer base, but an increase in customers was needed.

Brett's experience in management paid off as one year into their new venture when Covid-19 struck, and Brett and his team had to deal with significant business changes and challenges. For example, as many consumers isolated themselves from unnecessary meetings with other people, the store ultimately would get less traffic. However, with a mind focused on success, Brett and his team ensured that meetings and installations continued safely and efficiently.

 

One of Brett's primary concerns was finding a team he could rely on to help the business become stable, scalable and profitable. He gives much credit to his management team as they are the people who keep the wheels turning and make his job much more manageable.

With installations being done through subcontractors, Brett showed his standards to be very high. Brett sought out the best crews for installations himself, not wanting to have any issues surrounding installations.

Brett is concerned by the gap within the industry and says not enough trade jobs are being filled by young people. However, he does sound optimistic about the future of the flooring industry since the market is expanding. In addition, Brett has one of his four sons already working in the business, setting an example to his family on how to take up responsibility as a business owner.

 

The Rosebud Flooring Xtra store relies primarily on domestic flooring jobs; however, they take on commercial jobs here and there, too. There are many residential estate agents on the coastal strip between Dromana and Port sea they serve. The area is very densely populated, and the demographic of the Mornington Peninsula is unique. Some houses are quite old and basic, and others are mansions of some of the wealthiest Australian business people in the area. This diversity and density emphasise the size of the market in this area with relatively low competition for businesses.

 

Rosebud Flooring Xtra receives much work through positive word of mouth from previous customers who spread compliments on the service and products they received. In addition, most of the credit must be given to their online and social media presence, supporting their marketing function in the area. He believes that digital marketing in the future will play a more significant role, although a physical shop front is still vital today.

Brett enjoys the fruit of his labour away from work with his family and newly gained grandchild. He wants to be involved in his children's sporting activities and support them through all their life choices. Brett and the family are incredibly proud of one of his sons, who recently became part of a cricket talent program. In addition, Brett enjoys playing golf or cricket or even being out on the open water, fishing, and enjoying nature in his spare time.
