Carpet Types and How To Choose The Right For Your Home

Posted on 01.11.2019

Choosing the right carpet fibre for your home can be a daunting process. With so many carpet options to choose from, it pays to do your research and understand the pros and cons of each carpet type and whether it suits your home and lifestyle.

The carpet you choose will depend on a number of factors, from the area in your home, whether you have children or pets and the look and feel you are looking for and your budget.

We have compiled the four main carpet fibre types to help you decide which will suit and your family home best.

Wool Carpet

Suitable for: those looking for a luxurious carpet where softness is paramount

Wool is by far the premium carpet type. Wool is the only natural fibre made into carpets and is the most ecofriendly carpet choice on the market. Luxurious, soft and long lasting, wool carpets are both durable and stain resistant when a high-grade wool is chosen. Low grade wool can be combined with other synthetic materials to increase its durability and resistance to stains.

Nylon Carpet

Suitable for: those looking for the ideal combination of softness and durability at a reasonable price point.

Nylon is one of the most popular carpet choices on the market. It is both soft and durable with a high resistance to stains, making it the most versatile of carpet fibre options. Regular steam cleaning nylon carpet can work wonders in returning it to a pristine state. With a more reasonable price point, nylon carpets are a preferred option in most Australian homes.

Polyester Carpet

Suitable for: low use areas requiring fade-resistant carpeting

Polyester carpets are known for their ability to hold bright, fade-resistant colours and their non-allergenic properties so are suitable for those families with allergies. It can flatten under ongoing weight so is not recommended for high flow areas. On the plus side it is water resistant and soft to touch when used in thick-cut pile.

Olefin or polypropylene Carpet

Suitable for: those on a budget or for rental properties and garages.

Olefin, otherwise known as polypropylene is a synthetic fibre that sits at a lower price point than wool, nylon and polyester. It offers good stain and moisture resistance as it dries quickly but does not wear well. It is suitable for rental properties, garages and playrooms.

Choose your carpet wisely, taking into consideration the location and use of the areas you need to carpet. It is a great investment to your home and will set the tone of your home.
